Research Interests

His research focuses on international institutions and private actors in international security and the international political economy. Among other topics, he studies power shifts and institutional change in international institutions, power rivalries and co-optation in international orders, contestation of international institutions, transformations in the governance of national security, rising powers and private economic standards, and qualitative foresight methods in International Relations. His empirical expertise lies in the fields of international economic and security institutions, credit rating agencies, non-Western emerging economies, European security policymaking, and private military and security companies.

  • Institutional Management of International Power Rivalries: In this project, Andreas examines when and how international institutions – particularly through the mechanism of “co-optation” into existing orders – can contain international power rivalries.
  • Transformation of Security Governance: In this project funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Andreas serves as co-PI and investigates how, why, and with what consequences the foundations of governance and the policy instruments of democratic military powers and the European Union are changing across different fields of security policy. • Foresight on Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Competition: Another of Andreas’s projects develops methodological tools and analytical insights on the (de-)escalation of geopolitical and geoeconomic competition between the United States, Europe, and the BRICS+ countries. Paths & Projections Project
