Bernhard Zangl is Professor of Global Governance and Public Policy. In both his teaching and research, he studies international institutions. For example, he analyses how international institutions adapt to global power shifts and examines current challenges to the international order. In addition, his research and teaching address different forms of indirect governance in international institutions, particularly orchestration and co-optation. Another major focus of his work concerns loyalty in politics.
Bernhard Zangl studied Political Science and History at the University of Tübingen and earned his doctorate at the University of Bremen. Before moving to LMU Munich in 2009, he was Professor of International Relations at the University of Bremen. He has also held visiting positions at Harvard University, the European University Institute, Northwestern University, and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center.
His research has been published in journals including Annual Review of Political Science, British Journal of Political Science, European Journal of International Relations, International Studies Quarterly, Review of International Organizations, and Journal of European Public Policy. His most recent book, co-authored with Berthold Rittberger, Tim Heinkelmann-Wild, and Lisa Kriegmair, focuses on European Blame Games. Published by Oxford University Press, the book examines the conditions under which public blame for EU policy failures primarily targets European institutions (scapegoat games), individual member states (renegade games), or instead remains diffuse (diffusion games).
